Jolla receives new funding for Sailfish OS development

Jolla seems to be out of financial distress. New money is available for further development of Sailfish OS. In addition, the company continues to work with smartphone manufacturer Intex on the Aqua Fish, the first OEM smartphone with Sailfish OS.

The news can be deduced from the minutes of a collaboration meeting. The irc chatlog, where CEO Antti Saarnio announces the news himself, can be viewed in its entirety. He says Jolla has received funding from existing investors to continue developing Sailfish OS. The company will announce more about the news in a blog on Friday.

The news about the new financing would have become known internally on Wednesday. The chat log shows that Jolla is looking for a solution for ‘TabletGate’. In November, it was announced that Jolla was in financial trouble. The deliveries of the Jolla Tablet, for which money was raised through crowdfunding, ran into problems as a result.

The new financial injection also means that Jolla will continue its collaboration with the Indian manufacturer Intex. In July, the two companies announced their collaboration on the Jolla Aqua Fish. It is the first smartphone from an OEM that comes with Sailfish OS. Initially, the device should be released in late 2015 or early 2016.
