Jolla port Sailfish OS to Fairphone 2
Fairphone is working with the developers of Jolla to bring Sailfish OS to the Fairphone 2. Some developers of the Sailfish OS community already have prototypes up and running. There will be no technical support for the time being.
“The goal of partnering with Jolla is to bring the full Sailfish OS directly to our customers,” said Olivier Hebert, CTO of Fairphone. According to him, a large part of the users were already interested in a port of Sailfish OS to the Fairphone 2.
Sailfish OS developers are now working on getting a raw version of the mobile operating system to run stably on the devices. After that, the specific services of Jolla must be added, but how long that will take is not known.
The Fairphone 2 runs standard Fairphone OS, which is based on Android 5.1. The company will also continue to provide support for that software. Because of the limited amount of manpower, support for Sailfish OS is not included, says Hebert.
The port is part of Fairphone’s strategy to ensure fairer software. Earlier, a development environment of Fairphone OS was announced for this. Developers can use the open source code, dev tools, and binary blobs to create their own version of their software.
