John Romero has released a sequel to his unofficial DOOM episode Sigil. The id Software co-founder does this in honor of the thirtieth anniversary of DOOM, a game he made together with John Carmack, among others. Sigil II will be available for free.

According to Romero, Sigil II is an unofficial sixth episode for DOOM, which was released on December 10, 1993. Users can download Sigil II for free as ‘Megawad’ for the original DOOM game. A registered version of DOOM is required to play it. Physical fan boxes will also be available from 69.95 euros, with the Sigil II megawad on a USB stick or floppy disk, in addition to, for example, a poster and other merchandise.

The new expansion for DOOM is a successor to the first Sigil expansion, which was released in 2019. That was also an episode for the first DOOM game. Romero already said in 2021 that he was working on a sequel. He then said that Sigil II would be based on DOOM 2, although it is ultimately based on the original.

Thanks Romero DOOM players on social media. The game turned thirty years old this weekend and is still seen as one of the founders of modern first-person shooters. “Thirty years later, DOOM is still remembered for the community that plays it and releases mods. I’m grateful to be part of that community and lucky to have been there at the beginning.” On Sunday evening, Romero, together with id Software co-founder John Carmack and others, held a livestream to talk about DOOM.
