Gboard, Google’s own keyboard for Android and iOS, supports since this week more than five hundred languages and forty different writing systems. The app has been running for exactly two years this month.

Thanks to the support of more than 500 languages, ninety percent of the world’s population can now communicate with his smartphone in his mother tongue, according to Google in a blog post . Gboard can also handle more than forty different scripts, from the widespread Roman and Cyrillic alphabets to Ol Chiki, a script that is only used in one language: the Santali. Smart typing functions, such as auto-correction and text prediction, are also optimized for each language.

The Gboard keyboard was first released in December 2016 for the Android platform with support for about 100 languages. A version for iOS followed later. More than 100 new languages have been added to Gboard in recent months, including Nigerian Pidgin, Balinese, and Rangpuri.
