About 99 percent of the missing 650,000 bitcoin at Mt. Gox has been lost due to internal manipulation of the system. That claims a Japanese newspaper based on a source involved in the police investigation.

The Japanese police would have verified that only 7,000 bitcoins have disappeared in hacks from outside, the newspaper claims in an article about which Coindesk writes. The rest would have disappeared through internal manipulation of systems. The article does not state exactly how that would have happened.

If the information is correct, Mt. Gox lied. The service said the disappearance of the bitcoins was due to an old bug. Previously, hackers who had access to internal systems of Mt. Gox that internal fraud had been committed and investigators found the claim of Mt. Gox also debatable.

mt. Gox was once the largest bitcoin exchange in the world, but was taken offline last February and went bankrupt in April after the disappearance of the bitcoins became known.
