The Japan Display joint venture has developed a 5.5″ smartphone screen that not only has thin screen edges on the sides, but also on the top and bottom. According to the manufacturer, this allows the smartphone to be almost the same size as the screen.

The prototype of the 5.5″ LCD has a full HD resolution and Japan Display has named the model Full Active Display. To make the screen bezels so thin on all sides, the company has redesigned the wiring layout applied, used new processing techniques and adapted technique for the construction of the module. The company does not provide details about the improvements.

“The newly designed LCD module structure allows the size of a smartphone to be almost the same as that of the display,” claims Japan Display. It is not clear what the position is for, for example, the microphone and front camera, but according to the company, the design will help to develop ‘completely new smartphone products’. At the end of March 2017, the company will start mass production and the technology can be used for screens for other products.

Japan Display is a joint venture between Sony, Toshiba and Hitachi. The company supplies, among other things, screens for Apple’s iPhone and suffered a loss of millions last quarter, after which the joint venture turned to the Japanese government for financial support.
