Japan Display is working on 17.3″ LCD panel with 8k resolution
Japan Display, a consortium of Sony, Toshiba and Hitachi, has announced that it is developing a 17.3″ LCD panel with 8k resolution of 7680×4320 pixels. The panel has a refresh rate of 120Hz.
Using ltps technology, Japan Display has made a 17.3″ LCD panel with a resolution of 7680×4320 pixels, good for a pixel density of 510 ppi. The IPS panel has a refresh rate of 120Hz, viewing angle of 176 degrees, brightness of 500cd/m2 and a contrast ratio of 2000:1.
According to the consortium, the LCD module can be used in monitors used in video productions. However, the screen technology would also be suitable for gaming monitors and displays for medical applications. We are still waiting for 8k uhd content, but they are also working on that in Japan. For example, the public broadcaster in the country, the NHK, will be widely using this video format from 2020.
During Ceatec Japan 2015, a fair that takes place from October 7 to 10 in the Makahuri Messe, Japan Digital will show the prototype of the screen together with NHK.
