Japan Display develops VR screen with pixel density of 651ppi

Japan Display is working on a virtual reality headset screen with a pixel density of 651ppi. The 3.42″ screen of the Japanese joint venture is an LCD with a refresh rate of 90Hz.

According to Japan Display, the resolution of 1440×1700 pixels at a diagonal of 3.42 inches ensures that the wearer of a VR headset with the screen “barely” sees the pixel structure. With current VR glasses, the pixels can be seen, which detracts from the experience. For example, the pixel density of the Oculus Rift’s screen is 461ppi.

Japan Display is already delivering the first test versions of the 3.42″ screens with 651ppi to manufacturers. The company says it is working on variants with 800ppi. The company has no record with this: Sharp recently showed a 2.87″ screen for virtual reality. reality with a pixel density of 1008ppi. Both Sharp and Japan Display produce true LCDs. However, the PlayStation VR, the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive are equipped with OLED screens because of the better black display.

The Japan Display LCD offers a refresh rate of 90Hz, a response time of up to 6ms and a brightness of 150cd/m2. Japan Display is a joint venture between Sony, Toshiba and Hitachi. The company supplies, among other things, screens for Apple’s iPhone.
