Japan Display Develops 600ppi Electronic Ink Screen
Japan Display announces that it has partnered with E Ink Holdings to develop electronic ink screens with pixel densities of 400 and 600 pixels per inch. This makes them sharper than screens in current e-readers, which go up to about 300ppi.
The new electronic ink screens have a sharpness comparable to that of high-end smartphones. Japan Display has not yet announced in which sizes the screens will be made and when they will be released on the market. The company states that the screens will come to e-readers, but will also be used for IoT devices.
According to Japan Display, the development is the first result of the partnership with E Ink Holdings, which was announced in November last year. Japan Display is a consortium consisting of Sony, Toshiba and Hitachi. Until recently, it focused on the production of LCDs. By collaborating with E Ink, it also wants to appeal to other markets.
Many e-readers currently use the E Ink Carta screens. The 6″ variant has a resolution of 1448×1072 pixels, or a pixel density of 300ppi.
