Jagex has announced that it will be introducing a mobile version of the mmorpg Old School RuneScape this winter. The newer variant will follow in 2018. Players can, for example, log in to an existing account on a smartphone and play on different platforms.

According to Jagex, many RuneScape players shared the desire to be able to play the game on a smartphone or tablet as well. The British studio does not specifically say which platforms are supported, but the wording does not indicate that a particular mobile operating system is excluded. For example, the introduction should allow players to continue playing on mobile after a PC session. Blizzard’s Hearthstone card game, among others, offers similar functionality.

Old School RuneScape was introduced in 2013 and is close to the state of the game as it was in 2007. The original game, RuneScape Classic, was released in 2001 and is still playable for select players. A third variant, which was officially released in 2004 as RuneScape 2, was re-released in 2013 with RuneScape 3. This variant is referred to by Jagex as RuneScape. The studio says more than 250 million people have now played the game.
