IoSafe and Synology Release Waterproof and Fireproof NAS

Synology, together with the company ioSafe, has developed a nas that is waterproof and must be able to survive a fire. The storage system is therefore intended to secure data if a fire breaks out in a commercial building or if water damage occurs.

Five disks can be placed in the ioSafe 1515+. By means of an extra sturdy and fire-resistant housing, the drives can survive a temperature of 843°C according to the ASTM E119 specification. The NAS is also impervious to water damage, according to ioSafe, thanks to sealed drive bays. According to the specifications, stored data must still be intact after the NAS has been submerged under water for three days at a depth of 3.1 meters.

The ioSafe 1515+ is powered by a quad-core Intel Atom CPU clocked at 2.4GHz. The NAS contains 2GB of RAM as standard, but this can be increased to 6GB. The five drive bays can accommodate disks up to 6TB, good for a gross storage capacity of 30TB. IoSafe has equipped the NAS with four USB 3.0 ports and two esata connections. There are four gigabit Ethernet connections for making network connections.

The 1515+ NAS could achieve read and write speeds of 450 and 396MB/s respectively. When encryption is enabled, the speeds drop to 448 and 191MB/s respectively.

Synology provides its DSM software for the ioSafe built nas. For now, the ioSafe 1515+ is only available in the US. The suggested retail price is 1999 dollars, or 1680 euros.
