iOS and OS X users experience crash in Safari – update

Some iOS and OS X users have been reporting problems with the Safari browser since this morning. The crash occurs when entering text in the address bar. Since the issues happen on different versions of the browser, the recent update doesn’t seem to be the culprit.

The crash can be prevented by turning off the suggestions in Safari settings. The exact reason for the crash is not yet clear. Apparently there is a bug in the system that allows for autocompletion of searches. The crash does not occur when surfing in private mode.

On Reddit and Twitter, users are complaining about Safari crashing spontaneously. Apple’s support page has yet to report the issues. Since the issues also occur with Safari on Mac OS X, it appears to be a server-side issue rather than a local issue.

Update, 18:57: Apple claims to have solved the problem.
