Internet banking at a British bank has been down for six days due to software migration
TSB, a UK bank with 1.9 million customers, has been dealing with serious disruptions for six days. The environments for internet banking and banking via an app are disabled. The problems have been occurring since a software migration.
TSB customers are currently unable to bank or use the app, but there are more problems. For example, some customers were accidentally shown and allegedly had access to the data and accounts of other customers. For example, a customer tells the BBC that he had access to someone else’s savings account. The bank has admitted that this was the case on Sunday evening and involved 402 customers. There would also be problems with debit card and making payments.
TSB was originally part of Lloyds Bank, but was sold to the Spanish Banco Sabadell in 2015. Initially, Lloyds continued to manage the IT infrastructure, but that has now come to an end. Problems arose when transferring 1.3 billion customer records to the Proteo4UK banking platform, which was created by Sabadell.
The Guardian keeps a live blog about the problems. It says that the CEO of the bank says the problems are related to a lack of bandwidth. The app would struggle with a large number of concurrent users.
Earlier on Tuesday, the CEO promised that the services would work again in the afternoon, but that promise was not fulfilled. Now says he hopes the services will be back online tonight, however, he notes that he has instructed the IT staff not to put the services online until they are ‘really ready’. According to the CEO, the migration of customer data is the largest ever in Europe.
Banco Sabadell, owner of TSB, posted a press release online on Monday celebrating the successful migration. That message has since been taken offline again, probably because of the problems, but can still be read via Google ‘s cache .
The problems at the British bank are reminiscent of the protracted outage that occurred at the Belgian bank Argenta at the beginning of this month . There, the problems lasted for a week and internet banking and the app for mobile payments were also switched off. There, too, a migration to a different banking platform was the cause of the outage.
