Internet Archive makes 10,000 Amiga titles playable in the browser
The Internet Archive has added a new collection of software from yesteryear to its archive. The project’s Software Library has been expanded with more than ten thousand programs from the Commodore Amiga, which should be playable via the browser.
In total, the Amiga collection consists of 10,357 titles, including well-known games such as Alien Breed, Space Ace, R-Type, Xenon II, Turrican and Lemmings. Only a few games from many well-known studios and publishers such as the Bitmap Brothers, Sierra, Psygnosis, Ocean and Team 17 have been included and many games do not yet work in the browser’s html5 emulator.
According to an employee of the project there are also ‘billions’ of things to improve and refine. Alternatively, the adf files can be downloaded for running in an emulator such as WinUAE, but the user must then provide an emulator themselves. Incidentally, it is not just about games, programs such as Deluxe Paint and SoundTracker are also included in the collection, as well as many demos.
Previously, The Internet Archive has brought several thousand MS-DOS programs and hundreds of Arcade games to its online software library. The project is aimed at preserving digital heritage. The best known is the archive of the billions of web pages that are stored there and that provide the possibility to retrieve old versions of sites. In addition, the project offers more and more audio and video files.
