Internal memo: Amazon will run out of available employees in the US by 2024

Amazon would run out of available employees in some places in the United States within a few years. This is evident from an internal memo that Vox has seen. Amazon has no comment on the memo.

From the memo about which Vox publishes, it appears that the first places became problematic in finding new employees at the end of last year, while this will happen in many other places from the end of 2024. This mainly concerns the warehouses that Amazon uses to deliver goods from. The employees there are paid relatively low and have poor working conditions.

According to Vox, the memo is written as a wake-up call and also proposes various solutions. For example, Amazon can do its best to retain current employees longer, for example by offering higher wages. The disadvantage of this is that prices for consumers have to rise or the margin for Amazon falls.

Another solution is to increase automation, which means fewer employees are needed. It is unknown whether this is possible with current technology, which makes it an uncertain solution. What’s more, not all automation works flawlessly: Vox reports on an employee in New York who was fired by an algorithm despite his supervisors giving him positive reviews. Amazon has not responded to the internal memo.
