Amazon could run out of available staff in some places in the United States within a few years. This is apparent from an internal memo that Vox has seen. Amazon has not commented on the memo.

from the memo about which Vox publishes, it appears that the first places became problematic in finding new employees at the end of last year, while in many other places this will happen from the end of 2024. This mainly concerns the warehouses that Amazon uses to deliver goods from. The employees there are relatively low paid and have poor working conditions.

According to Vox, the memo was written as a wake-up call and also proposes various solutions. For example, Amazon can do its best to retain current employees for longer, for example by offering higher wages. This has the disadvantage that prices for consumers have to rise or the margin for Amazon decreases.

Another solution is to increase automation, which means fewer employees are needed. It is unknown whether this is possible with current technology, making it an uncertain solution. Also, not all automation works flawlessly: Vox reports on an employee in New York who was fired from an algorithm, despite his executives giving him positive ratings. Amazon has not responded to the internal memo.
