Intel to rename Pentium and Celeron CPUs to Intel Processor in 2023
Intel is rebranding its Pentium and Celeron processors: Intel Processor. These relatively cheaper processors will lose their old brand names in the laptop segment from next year.
Intel says that this move means it can better target its ‘flagship brands’, namely the Core, Evo and vPro. In contrast, the current Pentium and Celeron CPUs are grouped under the new name Intel Processor. This will include several processor series that, according to the company, are intended for the essential product space.
Josh Newman, a vice president at Intel, says this new Intel Processor brand name for its entry-level processors is primarily intended to simplify Intel’s offering for the PC, making it easier for users to choose the right CPU for their needs. It is not clear how exactly the company wants to distinguish between the entry-level processors and midrange models.
This new brand name will not affect Intel’s existing offerings or anything the company plans to release. Intel will therefore not make any product content changes to the offering apart from the marketing names.
The Pentium name was first used in 1993, at the time for high-end desktops. Later, the most expensive processor series was designated Core, after which Pentium was used for the midrange CPUs. The Celeron name was introduced in 1998 for CPUs in cheaper PCs.
