Intel announced during its keynote at the Computex trade fair in Taiwan that the first devices with 14nm chips should be released at the end of this year. The chip manufacturer will refer to these new processors, previously named Broadwell, as Core M CPUs.

Intel CEO Renee James showed a reference design of a 12.5″ tablet with a Core M CPU under the hood during the keynote. According to James, the 14nm chip draws less than 10W, making it possible to make devices that Without fans, Intel already has processors that burn less than 10W, but they are less powerful than the upcoming Core M chips.

How Intel will position the Core M series relative to the current Core i line is not yet known; the company did not say whether all processors from the Broadwell generation will receive the Core M name or whether it will only concern the extra economical variants.

One of the first devices with a Core M processor will be the Transformer Book 300 Chi from Asus, which was already shown earlier this week. At the time, Asus was still talking about a ‘next generation’ processor. Like Intel’s reference design, this is a 12.5″ tablet just over 7mm thick that is completely passively cooled. The Chi can be plugged into a keyboard dock to turn it into a laptop. The 300 Chi must on the shelves before the end of the year.
