Intel to produce ARM chips after signing license agreement
Intel announced at its Developer Forum meeting in San Francisco that it has entered into a licensing agreement with ARM. With this, the company enables third parties to produce ARM chips in its own factories.
Intel writes that it wants those parties to use the 10nm finfet process to produce the chips. ARM reports in a press release that it has therefore made its Artisan Physical IP, ARM’s intellectual property, available to Intel. On this basis, third parties can produce chips for Apple and Qualcomm, among others. Currently, the chips are produced by Samsung and TSMC. In this way, Intel will gain access to the telephone market, Bloomberg writes.
At the same time, Intel announced that LG will use the Custom Foundry’s 10nm platform. The chipmaker says the South Korean company will use this to produce parts for its devices.
ARM is currently in a takeover by Japan’s Softbank. That paid an amount of 29 billion euros for the company.
