Intel to partner with eyewear company to develop smart glasses

Intel has teamed up with eyewear company Luxottica to develop various types of smart glasses. The first product resulting from the partnership between the companies will be released in 2015, the companies say.

The goal of the partnership is to create products that are “meaningful and desirable,” the announcement said. However, it is unclear what exactly the companies mean by this.

It’s not the eyewear company’s first partnership for smart glasses. Luxottica has previously announced a partnership with Google. The announcement comes a day after the rumor that Google would like to equip new Glass glasses with Intel chips. It is unknown whether this is a separate collaboration or whether the three companies are jointly developing smart glasses.

The current Explorer edition of Google Glass includes an ARM soc from Texas Instruments. It’s unclear which Intel chips are involved, but the Quark would be the most likely option. Intel has developed the x86 soc for internet-of-things applications.
