Intel to hold chip architecture event on December 11
According to AnandTech, Intel will hold an event on December 11 where it will provide details about its chip architecture for upcoming products. It has become less and less common in recent years for the processor manufacturer to organize such events.
It is not yet clear which product group the event will be about, but according to AnandTech, Intel will provide an ‘update’ and the chip architects and technicians of the company will be present. This may concern developments in the field of CPUs or GPUs, or the production process. Intel is working on the switch to 10nm, but has problems with that, Intel is also working behind the scenes on 7nm production.
Recently, Intel unveiled its Cascade Lake processors. For a model with 48 cores, the manufacturer will probably use a multichip design, in which two dies are connected to an interconnect. Intel hasn’t given much details about that yet. AMD applies the same strategy in all its processors based on the Zen architecture.
Intel could also provide information about its separate GPU, which should be released in 2020. Almost nothing is known about the GPU yet. At the end of last year, Raja Koduri, the former AMD Radeon CEO, was hired by Intel to work on high-end GPUs.
According to AnandTech, it is not yet clear whether the information shared on December 11 will also be made public immediately, or whether it concerns details that are provided under a non-disclosure agreement. If the latter is the case, a date will be agreed on when the information may be published.
Intel has released fewer and fewer technical details about its processors in recent years. Until 2016, the manufacturer held its annual Intel Developer Forum, regularly providing details about chip architectures and revealing new technological developments. Last year, Intel announced it would discontinue its IDF events. Intel also provides less and less information to media. The American company has completely stopped PR activities in the Benelux.
