Intel to close factory of head-up displays for athletes

Intel has reportedly shut down Recon, a Canadian factory of head-up displays for industrial applications and athletes. About a hundred people worked at the subsidiary of the chip giant.

The closure of Recon took place earlier last summer, Bloomberg reports citing sources. Intel acquired Recon in 2015, but has since cut a third of its workforce. Now Intel would have closed the doors of the company completely. Intel would still deliver existing orders and told Bloomberg “it will continue to work on technology for augmented reality and virtual reality”.

Recon was founded in 2008 and delivered its first consumer head-up display in 2010. The company made ski goggles and headsets for cyclists, among other things. Intel has been closing or downsizing unprofitable parts for some time now. In the past year, for example, Intel stopped using technology for independent VR glasses, developing wearables and making computing boards for the Internet of Things.
