Intel to analyze sprints at Olympic Games with 3D camera system

Intel is bringing an athlete analysis system to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Intel calls this 3D Athlete Tracking, or 3DAT. The information is used to create overlays that can be shown on TV broadcasts.

According to Intel, the 3DAT system works with multiple 4k cameras that capture and track the athletes during the spin. The resulting data is processed in a data center and the sprint is then visualized. Intel shows that in this way, for example, the speed course of the hundred-meter sprint can be made transparent.

Intel says that 3DAT works with artificial intelligence and computer vision, and that it works in near real-time, so the analytics can be added as an overlay during live broadcasts. Intel does not provide technical details about the operation or equipment in its announcement.
