Intel simplifies naming Atom processors
Intel has divided the naming convention for its Atom chips into three segments. The processors are named with x3, x5, and x7 suffix, according to performance. The Atoms follow the naming convention of Core processors.
Intel will now divide its economical processors for tablets and smartphones into Atom x3, x5 and x7 lines based on a good, better, best principle, the chip manufacturer reports. This should give consumers a better idea of the performance of the chips in tablets, the company believes.
According to Intel, consumers are faced with a dizzying array of choices as the tablet market matures. “It’s hard to understand what kind of experience a tablet will deliver as performance and features vary and aren’t always related to price,” Intel said.
With the subdivision, the Atoms follow the Core processors, which have been classified in Core i3, i5 and i7 models since 2010. Until now, Intel used a Z prefix for the chips for tablets and smartphones, followed by four numbers. In the past, that was three digits and there was an N prefix for netbook chips, Intel says on its site for naming schemes.
