Intel Security continues independently as McAfee

Intel’s security unit, Intel Security, has announced that it will resume operations as McAfee in the future. The chipmaker took over the company in 2010, but Intel has now announced that the division of the part has been completed.

In an announcement, McAfee announced that it would again operate under its own name. Intel will hold a 49 percent stake in the new company. The remaining 51 percent are in the hands of the investment company TPG, as Intel announced in September. The stock was sold for $3.1 billion. The decision should give McAfee back a “clear purpose” as a security company.

In 2010, Intel bought McAfee for $7.7 billion. In 2014, the chip giant changed the name of its security arm from McAfee to Intel Security. Intel saw growth opportunities in 2010 to combine the security technology of the company founded by John McAfee in 1987 with its hardware expertise, but the Santa Clara company struggled to get enough benefits from the combination and integrate Intel Security into its organization.
