Intel lays off ‘hundreds’ of employees

Intel has had one round of layoffs, the company has confirmed. The company is not reporting on the number of employees affected by the reorganization, but insiders say hundreds in the US and Costa Rica are involved.

The reorganization would not so much be intended to reduce costs due to disappointing results, but more to simplify the management of internal technical systems. In the past, Intel had agreements with various parties for this, but now the company would place it with the Indian IT company Infosys. That is stated in an internal memo that The Oregonian got its hands on. That site often writes about internal Intel matters. Oregon is one of Intel’s largest sites, with approximately 20,000 employees. Intel would, among other things, need fewer managers to oversee this due to the simplification of IT management.

Intel confirms that layoffs have been made. “Changes in our workforce are made based on what is needed for our business. We are continuously evaluating that.” Intel does not want to name numbers, but according to The Oregonian, it concerns hundreds of employees at various locations in the US and an administrative department in Costa Rica. It would even be one of the largest layoffs since 2016. Then the chip company cut a total of 15,000 jobs.

At the same time, Intel is hiring again as it expands factories in Ireland, Israel and Oregon in the US. At the end of 2018, Intel employed 107,400 employees.
