Intel has announced its first Xeon processors based on the Kaby-Lake architecture. The quad-core CPUs in the E3-1200 v6 family have slightly higher clock speeds and lower consumption compared to their predecessors in the v5 series.

The specifications of the Xeon E3-1200 v6 processors are largely similar to the Kaby-Lake consumer processors, which Intel released in January. However, the Xeon server variants support ECC memory and Intel’s vPro, among other things.

Although the processors use the same lga1151 socket, a special chipset is needed. However, Intel does not release a new chipset, the E3-1200 v6 processors can be used after a bios update just like their predecessors on motherboards with the C232 or C236 chipset.

Intel comes with eight different models in the E3-1200 v6 series for desktop PCs. The cheapest model costs 192 dollars and has a clock speed of 3GHz with a turbo of 3.5GHz. The top model costs $ 612 and has a speed of 3.9 GHz with a boost to 4.2 GHz. Most models do not have a built-in GPU, in the three variants that do, the TDP with 73W is marginally higher than the GPU-less variants with TDP of 72W.

The comparable models in the E3-1200 v5 series, based on the Skylake architecture, had a TDP of 80W and clock speeds of about 0.2GHz lower. In the v5 series, there were also economical variants with a tdp of 25W for sale. They will also come in that v6 series, but when and with which tdp is not yet known.
