Intel is introducing eighteen new products within the second generation of its Xeon Scalable server processors. According to Intel, among the new Cascade Lake server processors are two copies with the highest clock speeds for servers: 3.9GHz and a turbo of 4.5GHz.

The new processors, identified by the letters R, T or U after the type names, are designed for lower-cost servers and mainsteam server systems with one or two sockets, according to Intel. Intel says the new processors offer better performance and, above all, more performance per dollar. The new second-generation Intel Xeon Gold processors would deliver a 36 percent improvement in performance over the first generation chips and a 42 percent improvement in performance per dollar. The new processors are still made on a 14nm process.

To achieve that, Intel says it has added more cores and increased cache amounts and clock speeds. Intel introduces, among other things, the Intel Xeon Gold 6200 series, where the Xeon Gold 6250 has a base clock of 3.9 GHz with a turbo boost of 4.5 GHz. According to the company, this chip is especially suitable for simulations, databases, high-performance computing and other applications that scale well at higher clock speeds. This 6250 has eight cores and costs $3400.

The most expensive model is the 6258R, a CPU with 28 cores and 56 threads, a clock speed of 2.7GHz and a turbo of 4.0GHz. This processor has exactly the same specifications as the Intel Xeon Platinum 8280 released in April last year, but is more than twice as cheap. A similar example concerns the difference between the Gold 6248R and the Platinum 8268; the specifications of both processors are almost the same, but here too the price difference is considerable.
