Intel Introduces Optane 800P M2 SSDs With 3D XPoint Memory
Intel has expanded its Optane line of storage products with 3D XPoint memory with the SSD 800p. The SSD 800P is available with storage capacities of 58GB and 118GB and is intended for mainstream use.
The two variants of the Intel SSD 800P have the m2-2280 form factor and use a pci-e 3.0 x2 interface with nvme. The drives should make the 3D XPoint memory available to a wider audience: the SSD 900P variants are for the high-end market and are only available as plug-in card or in the U2 form factor, while the Optane Memory modules with low storage capacities are only available. are for caching.
The SSD 800P also does not have large storage amounts and does not excel with its sequential speeds. The SSDs perform well in terms of random read and write and the low latency is also an advantage. Intel itself therefore emphasizes combining the 800P with other storage media such as multiple SSDs in raid configurations to make systems more responsive.
Low consumption and long endurance are also advantages. Intel’s 3D XPoint memory is phase change memory, where bits are stored by physical changes. It should combine the advantages of dram, such as low latency, with the storage capacity of flash.
According to AnandTech, the pci-e 3.0 x2 interface is not a bottleneck, but the price of the SSD 800P is too high. For the same price, decent entry-level SSDs with NVME and with four times the storage capacity are available, making it difficult to recommend the SSD 800P. Those who want Optane performance should go for the 900P, which offers more storage capacity, a lower price per GB and better performance, the site notes.
