Intel introduces 545s SSDs with 64-layer 3D NAND
Intel has released the first SSD with 64-layer 3D-Nand TLC memory and floating gate cells. It is a 545s 512GB SSD with a SATA connection that is intended for the mainstream consumer market.
Several manufacturers, such as Toshiba, WD and Samsung, have already announced 64-layer 3D Nand memory, but it is Intel that makes the first SSD with this type of memory available. Intel uses traditional floating gate memory cells, where the gate is a conductor, while Samsung opts for the new charge trap technique, where the electrons are trapped in an insulating layer. Intel claims to be able to achieve a higher data density than competitors with this.
Intel and its partner Micron already made 32-layer 3d nand, but did not use it in consumer SSDs. The predecessor of the 545s, the 540s, uses Sk Hynix TLC memory. According to Anandtech, Intel only uses 256Gb memory for the 545s and no 512Gb parts yet. The controller is the Silicon Motion SM2259.
In the coming weeks, 545s SSDs with m2 form factor should also appear and the current 512GB version will also be available with variants with capacities ranging from 128GB to 2TB. According to AnandTech, the results of initial benchmarks indicate that the Intel 545s is a formidable competitor to the Samsung 850 EVO, but the suggested retail price of $179, converted and including VAT, is a bit on the high side.
