Intel: GPU Cherry Trail-Atom will be twice as powerful as Bay Trail’s

Intel promises to significantly improve the graphics performance of its upcoming Atoms. Cherry Trail’s GPU, which is produced at 14nm instead of 22nm, is said to be twice as powerful as that of the current Bay Trail platform.

Cherry Trail will be the first Atom to be produced at 14nm and the soc for tablets and smartphones should therefore bring significant energy savings compared to the current 22nm socs of the Bay Trail generation. At the same time, the performance when running 3D graphics should be doubled, according to a slide that Intel revealed during IDF 2014. The claim is based on a test of GFX Bench Egypt HD, against the results of an Atom Z3775. Earlier it was announced that the 8th generation GPU of Cherry Trail will get 16 execution units, compared to 4 for the 7th generation of Bay Trail.

The Cherry Trail SOCs should go into mass production in early 2015, according to Intel CEO Brian Krzanich. The SOCs will be combined with Intel’s XMM 7260-lte modem, which will also be used for Bay Trail. Intel did provide some additional information about the successor XMM 7360, which is still under development. It should support mimo downlink 8×2 and 4×4 data streams, for faster and more stable connections.
