Intel document confirms arrival of Z390 chipset and X399 platform for hedt
A document from Intel refers to the Z390 chipset, which has not yet been announced. An X399 chipset is also on the list. That should be the successor X299 for the high-end desktop platform.
Intel mentions the unannounced chipsets in a document about its Rapid Storage Technology software. Z390 is in the list with the already known chipsets for Coffee Lake CPUs, such as Z370 and the recently released H370 and H310 chipsets. Last week, Intel already mentioned a Cannon Lake octacore processor in its own documents. Presumably, it will be introduced together with the Z390 chipset.
Furthermore, the table states that all these chipsets also support Cannon Lake CPUs. These are processors of the ninth generation, the successors of the current Coffee Lake models. Many official details about Cannon Lake are not yet known, but probably processors made at 10nm.
The mention of X399 as a hedt platform is striking. AMD currently uses that name for its Threadripper platform. Despite this, it seems that Intel will use the same name, as a successor to the X299 platform. The current X299 platform works with Skylake-X and Kaby Lake-X processors. Although Intel lists Cannon Lake and Coffee Lake for X399 in the table, an earlier roadmap showed the name Cascade Lake-X.
When Intel will officially announce the Z390 chipset and the X399 platform is not yet known, but the fact that the names are mentioned in official documentation seems to indicate that the release is near. Intel may use the Computex stock exchange in Taiwan, which will start on June 5, as an introduction moment.
