“Intel closes German branches in Nuremberg and Duisburg”
Intel will close its offices in Nuremberg and Duisburg, Germany, at the end of this year, according to business sources in Germany. The closure comes as no surprise; Intel developed modem chips and software for smartphones in the affected locations.
The closure in Nuremberg will affect 250 jobs and 200 employees in Duisburg, Heise writes based on sources. Intel declined to comment on the message. The closure is the result of Intel’s sale of the modem division to Apple. The iPhone maker took over Intel’s Munich division, but not the Duisburg and Nuremberg sites.
Apple is said to have offered key employees to work in Munich, but few would have taken advantage of this arrangement because of the distance. According to Heise, Nuremberg has a long tradition in mobile communications technology. Ericsson, Alcatel Lucent and Teleca, among others, had divisions for this in the city.
