Intel announces Xeon with 28 cores for workstations
Intel announced the Xeon W-3175X on Monday. The processor has 28 cores and is intended for powerful workstations. The clock speed is up to 4.3GHz in burst mode and the processor will be released in December.
The Xeon W-3175X is a Cascade Lake processor based on the Skylake architecture. The chip with 28 cores and 56 threads is the model that Intel demonstrated in June during a high-profile session at Computex. Then the manufacturer said the chip ran at 5GHz. However, the clock speed of the Xeon is a maximum of 4.3GHz with Turbo Boost, so on a single core. The chip also gets an unlocked multiplier.
The processor is on a motherboard with an lga3647 socket, and at least Asus and Gigabyte have announced that they will come up with such motherboards. Intel has not yet disclosed further details about the processor. In the earlier demonstration, Intel used a system with a 1600W power supply and the processor was cooled with a water chiller.
Update, 17.30: Intel has released more specifications. The processor runs standard at 3.1GHz and has a TDP of 255W. In addition, there is 38.5MB L3 cache and there is support for 68 PCI-e lanes and six-channel DDR4-2666-ram.
