Intel announces unlocked Pentium and Core i7-4790K quad-core at 4GHz – update

Intel announced the Pentium Anniversary Edition with an unlocked multiplier at Computex 2014. The processor will be available this month. In addition, the Core i7-4790K has been announced: Intel’s first quad-core at 4GHz.

Intel added two striking new processors to its range on Tuesday. The first is the Pentium Anniversary Edition, which will be released on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Pentium. It is a dual-core with clock speed of 3.2GHz and with unlocked multiplier for overclocking possibilities. Among other things, the chip supports Quick Sync and is compatible with the Series 9 chipset. The processor will be available in June for an unknown price.

In addition, the Intel Core i7-4790K has appeared. This is the top model of the Haswell Refresh series and with this Intel has released the first K processor with unlocked multiplier from that series. The Core i7-4790K is also Intel’s first quad-core with a base frequency of 4GHz. The introduction is accompanied by an improved thermal connection between the chip and the ihs. Among other things, Intel has added more capacitors and used a new generation of the Polymer Thermal Interface Material for the package.

Update, 10.30: In addition to the Intel Core i7-4790K, Intel has also announced the Core i5-4690K. This quad-core without HyperThreading support runs at 3.5GHz by default. The US suggested retail price for the Core i7-4790K is $339, the Core i5-4690K is $242.

The product designation for the Pentium is the G3258. The dual-core will have a suggested retail price of $72.
