Intel Announces DDR4 Processors and Anniversary Pentium

Chip maker Intel has released details of its desktop processor plans for the rest of the year. The company wants to release new Haswell processors and also comes with support for DDR4 memory.

Haswell’s successor will have to wait until 2015: those processors codenamed Broadwell will be produced at 14nm and can handle a new Series 9 chipset. Intel will equip some Broadwell processors with its most powerful GPU, Iris Pro Graphics: so far only laptop processors are equipped with Iris Pro.

In order to bridge the time until a Broadwell introduction, Intel will first introduce the so-called Haswell refresh in mid-2014: new Haswell processors that can handle the new H97 chipset. The code name for these Core processors is Devil’s Canyon and the processors will receive an improved thermal connection between the chip and the ihs, among other things. Devil’s Canyon processors get a freely adjustable multiplier to make them attractive to overclockers, and the improved tim should allow that without overheating.

The Pentium series will also be updated in mid-2014 with a special edition to celebrate Pentium’s 20th anniversary. The Pentium Anniversary Edition will receive an unlocked multiplier, will feature Intel’s Quick Sync Video technology and will be compatible with both the Series 8 and 9 chipsets.

Intel reserves its Haswell-E processors for the high-end segment. These Extreme Edition Core i7 processors should arrive in the second half of 2014 and will be equipped with eight Haswell cores. In addition, the CPUs are equipped with a new memory controller that works with DDR4 memory. The Haswell-E processors are combined with the new X99 chipset.
