Intel and Dell show tablets annex laptops with folding OLED screens
Intel showed a concept tablet at CES with a folding 17″ touchscreen. The tablet/laptop, codenamed Horseshoe Bend, has an OLED screen and the form factor of a 12″ device. Dell showed a variant with a 13″ screen and a laptop with two screens.
Intel executive vice president Gregory Bryant demonstrated Horseshoe Bend during Intel’s presentation at CES. According to the manufacturer, it is a platform on which manufacturers can base their own products. Intel demonstrated how users in laptop mode can scroll across the entire screen, how the lower part showed a different image than the top and how the device can be unfolded as a 17-inch tablet or all-in-one in combination with mouse and keyboard. Horseshoe Bend ran on an upcoming Tiger Lake processor.
Lenovo already revealed on Monday that it had a ThinkPad laptop based on the concept with a 13.3 “OLED screen. Dell is also working on a model with 13” screen, the Concept Ori. The Ori appears relatively thick in the image and it is not known whether Dell is developing the concept into a commercial product.
Dell is also working on the Concept Duet, a device with two separate 13.4″ screens with full HD resolution. This concept is similar to Microsoft’s Surface Neo. It is also unknown whether the Duet will appear on the market, but a roadmap from Dell last year spoke of the arrival of an “XPS Dual Screen Maximus” possibly referring to the Duet, or a similar device, the said devices running Windows 10X, which is optimized for dual-screen devices.
