Intel: 40+ Ivy Bridge Ultrabooks With Touchscreens Coming

There will be a total of 140 different Ivy Bridge ultrabooks, of which more than 40 with touchscreens. In addition, more than 20 Windows 8 tablets with Atoms are on the way, Intel announced at the presentation of its quarterly figures.

Production of the 22nm Ivy Bridge chips is moving faster and faster than expected than Sandy Bridge’s 32nm production around this time last year, Intel CEO Paul Otellini said during the quarterly results announcement. At the beginning of this year, Intel had to report that production was delayed. Ivy Bridge now makes up a quarter of Intel’s PC chip production and this would be Intel’s fastest disaster ever.

Otellini said manufacturers are producing more than 140 ultrabooks with Ivy Bridge chips. More than 40 of these would be equipped with touchscreens to be able to use the touch capabilities of Windows 8. Of those 40, about twelve would be so-called convertibles with rotating screens. The Intel CEO expects that ultrabooks with a price of around $699 will be on sale this fall.

Intel is also trying to gain a foothold in the tablet market. According to the manufacturer, manufacturers are working on more than 20 different models with Windows 8 and Clover Trail atoms. In addition, there would be ‘some’ Windows 8 tablets with Core processors on the way.

Intel’s quarterly revenue was $13.5 billion, compared to $13.1 billion a year ago. Earnings fell from $3.2 billion to $2.8 billion compared to the same period last year. However, Otellini warned of less growth in the third quarter.
