Insurer asr will offer customers gift cards and discounts if they use a fitness tracker and accompanying app to exercise. Customers can put on a FitBit, Apple Watch or other tracker to show they are exercising regularly.

The program is called asr Vitality. It is intended to encourage people to exercise more often, says asr in a press release. Users must download a special app and link it to their fitness tracker. That app tracks various goals, such as how much a customer moves and whether he does it regularly. Before using the app, customers also have to fill out a questionnaire with data about their health.

Customers can choose different rewards when they join the program. These are partly based on the different goals set by the app. A customer who achieves his weekly exercise goal can choose from gift cards or gifts from an online store. A customer can also purchase an Apple Watch or FitBit from asr and receive a monthly refund with the program. On an annual basis, a customer can get money back on his additional health insurance if it is taken out with Ditzo or De Amersfoortse. The amount of that discount depends on how much the user moves. This is measured by the app in so-called Vitality Points.

The insurer is working for the program together with South African Discovery. That has set up several similar health programs around the world, usually in partnership with companies or health insurers. Asr points out in its privacy statement that Discovery processes the data in Frankfurt. That information is not in Discovery’s privacy statement.
