Instagram to ‘optimize’ feed order with algorithm

Instagram is also moving away from the chronological timeline. The service says it will adjust the order of users’ feed in the coming months and claims to put “the moments you care about most” at the top.

According to Instagram, users don’t see an average of 70 percent of the photos that appear in their feed, and they miss moments that they would like to see. That’s why Instagram is working on a new feed, which will adjust the order of photos and videos. The order is based on the likelihood that a user is interested in the content, the user’s relationship with the person posting the content, and the time the content is posted.

Instagram emphasizes that only the order will be adjusted, but that all content will still be shown. This makes the algorithm different from that used on Facebook. On that social network, users are shown a selection of all content in their timeline. It is unknown whether Instagram will make the custom view optional or mandatory for all users. The service says it takes the time to properly implement the algorithm and also says it listens to feedback from users.
