Innersloth Announces VR Variant of Popular Party Game Among Us
The popular party game Among Us is getting a standalone VR version. The game will continue to use the well-known structure of impostors and crew members, but trades the third-person perspective for a first-person point of view.
The original creator of Among Us Innersloth has teamed up with developers Robot Teddy and Schell Games to realize the VR version of the social deduction game, Oculus said. Among Us VR will be released for the former Oculus Quest, now renamed Meta Quest, as well as for the Valve Index and PlayStation VR. No price or release date has yet been announced. Innersloth does let you know that the game is not compatible with the regular version of the game. So players in Among Us VR only play with other owners of the VR variant.
For now, the game will only get one map called Skeld, where crew members have to control and maintain a spaceship together like in the original game. Once again, one or more impostors, called impostors, have to thwart the regular crew members. All of this takes place in virtual reality in Among Us VR, which means that for the first time, players will have to solve puzzles, kill others, and confer among themselves on who the impostors are from a first-person perspective.
Among Us initially came out for iOS and Android in 2018 and was released for PC a few months later. The game initially flew under the radar and only became a global hit in the summer of 2020 due to a lot of attention from Twitch streamers and YouTubers. The game was also released in the fall of 2020 for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5 and the Xbox One, Series X and S. Among Us was reportedly the most downloaded mobile game of 2020 and with 500 million active players, it could even become the largest mobile game in the world. record of most simultaneous players in a video game ever set.
