ING postpones phasing out tan code due to coronavirus

ING is postponing the phasing out of the tan code due to the corona virus. The app and the scanner would take over the operation of the 2fa codes, but the bank is counting on a lot of demand for help from ING branches when switching over, which is not possible at the moment.

The farewell to tan codes has been postponed indefinitely, says ING. “Everything is upside down and so are our plans.” Originally, the bank planned to retire the tan codes by the end of this month. Any messages that customers have received about this from the bank can therefore also be regarded as not being sent.

According to ING, the tan code is now about 32 years old. The codes are a series of characters to which a sequence number is attached. When transferring via internet banking, the bank provides a serial number, after which the customer must enter the code. Tan codes can be obtained on paper or by SMS. There are now two alternatives to tan codes: the scanner, since 2019, and confirm in the ING app, since 2017.
