Indian company to sell smartphone for about 3 euros – update

The Indian smartphone manufacturer Ringing Bells has presented the Freedom 251: a 4 “smartphone that will be offered for 251 rupees. Converted that is 3.30 euros and given the hardware used, that is far below the cost price.

The 3G device has a 4″ IPS screen with a resolution of 960×540 pixels. There is 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage space, which can be expanded with a micro-SD card of up to 32GB. The Freedom 251 has a unspecified quad-core-soc with a speed of 1.3 GHz, the back has a 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus, the front camera has a resolution of 0.3 megapixel, the battery capacity is 1450 mAh and the device runs on Android 5.1.

It is not clear how many copies the manufacturer of the device can supply or what the revenue model is. Manufacturer Ringing Bells will probably receive a government subsidy; according to various websites, the smartphone will be presented today in New Delhi by the Indian defense minister. The smartphone also comes with a number of pre-installed apps, which the manufacturer could get money for. The Freedom 251 is available to order in India from February 18 on the website of the same name and is available at 650 points of sale.

Update 13:33: The images on the Freedom251 website do not show the actual appearance of the device. Hands-on photos of the smartphone can be seen on the Gadgets360 website. It also shows that the phone has two SIM card slots.
