Imagination presents first GPU on Furian architecture
The first PowerVR GPU from Imagination for smartphones and cars based on the new Furian architecture scores 50 to 80 percent better in the graphics benchmark GFXBench at the same clock speed, according to the manufacturer. Imagination is announcing the GPU.
According to Imagination, the PowerVR GT8525 is a lot faster than its predecessor GT7200 on benchmarks such as GFXBench and AnTuTu and achieves up to 50 percent more gflops than its predecessor. The GT8525 has two clusters and is mainly intended for use in high-end smartphones and for infotainment systems of cars.
It is the first GPU that Imagination openly talks about on the Furian architecture. The company presented the new architecture in March. The Furian GPUs should enable various applications that are currently not possible, such as next-gen augmented and virtual reality. In addition, Imagination focuses on the market for cars and machine learning systems that can take advantage of the PowerVR GPUs.
Imagination has already provided copies of the GT8525 to its ‘key customer’. In recent years that was Apple, but the companies got into a fight this spring. That’s because Apple is working on its own GPU, now that it has been designing its own CPUs for years.
The first products with the GT8525 should appear on the market early next year. It is unknown what kind of products those are. Imagination said earlier that GPUs based on Furian and Rogue will coexist for a few more years.
