Image shows possible GeForce GTX 980 with two 6-pin connectors
An image of what may be the GeForce GTX 980 video card has been published on the internet. Nvidia appears to be using the Titan Z’s backplate for its upcoming flagship, and there are two 6-pin power connectors instead of a 6-pin and an 8-pin connector.
The images have appeared on Videocardz, which often publishes correct information about upcoming video cards and GPUs. The images show a graphics card with Nvidia’s nvttm cooling, similar to that used in the GeForce GTX 780, GTX 780 Ti and Titan. According to Videocardz, the same backplate as the Titan Z was used for the model.
There are two 6-pin connections and an 8-pin variant would not be necessary as the card with 180W would have a relatively low tdp. Lately, high-end cards have featured 6-pin and 8-pin power connectors, which, along with the 75W that the PCI-e slot can deliver, can provide a maximum power of 300W. With the GTX 980, that would be a maximum of 225W. In combination with the cooling, there is still the necessary space for overclocking. The low consumption in combination with the apparent high-end card suggests that the GPU is not produced on the usual 28nm.
The card features Samsung K4G41325FC-HC28 memory modules, with a total storage capacity of 4GB and a modified layout from previous cards. There is a five-phase power supply on the GTX 980. The card is said to have HDMI, DVI and three display ports, although they are not shown in the images.
According to previous rumors, Nvidia will announce the cards on September 19.
