IDC: Phone buyers will pay less for smartphones from 2023

Smartphone buyers will pay less for a smartphone from 2023 than they did in 2022. That is what analyst firm IDC predicts. The average price of a smartphone rose in recent years, but according to the analyst firm, it has now reached its peak.

In 2022, buyers spent an average of $415 on a phone, says IDC. That was still $ 334 in 2019. In the coming years, that amount will steadily decrease to $ 376, the company predicts. This would put an end to the years of increase.

This increase was partly due to increased smartphone prices. High-end phones rarely cost more than 1000 euros five years ago, now there are many Pro, Ultra and foldable phones that have a suggested retail price of well over 1000 euros. The actual prices for which manufacturers supply those devices are often lower. The fact that the average selling price has not risen much is because there is the most demand worldwide for cheap smartphones.

IDC is also adjusting its expectations for deliveries this year. Until now, it expected a small growth in the number of smartphones delivered, but that growth will no longer occur, the company now believes. Instead, the number of smartphones delivered will decrease slightly.
