IDC: PC monitor shipments fell faster than ever last quarter
There were 18.3 percent fewer PC monitor shipments in the fourth quarter of 2022 than in the same quarter of 2021. Since IDC started tracking the numbers in 2008, there have been fewer monitor shipments in a quarter.
In the last quarter, just over 30.5 million monitors were shipped, reports IDC based on figures from the top five PC monitor manufacturers. As a result, the total year-on-year decline is 5.9 percent compared to 2021. The research firm attributes this to the “challenging macro environment.” During the height of the corona pandemic, monitor sales skyrocketed due to many working from home, but now that people are slowly working in the office again, demand plummets, IDC argues.
Dell managed to sell by far the most monitors last year and has a market share of around 22 percent. The four other manufacturers are more evenly matched, but last quarter HP took second place, followed by Lenovo, China’s TPV and finally Samsung, with all four having a market share of between 10 and 13 percent.
IDC expects the market to shrink by another 9.8 percent this year due to “deteriorating economic conditions,” but to return to modest growth in 2024. Then approximately the same number of monitors will have to be supplied as before the pandemic. The research agency expects increasing growth after 2024, partly thanks to the higher installed base as a result of more people taking up hybrid work and the growth in gaming monitors.
