Call us old-fashioned, but the best Tetris game is still the classic Gameboy version from 1989. In fact, most of the games on the first handheld were very good, even thirty years later. HyperKin has a new console for everyone who agrees: the RetroN.
The RetroN is a small cube-shaped console that allows players to play classic Gameboy games on their television. The concept is quite simple: insert a Gameboy, Gameboy Color or Gameboy Advance cartridge, connect the device to your television, and you can play the 12 levels of Super Mario Land on a big screen. The RetroN works with a USB-C connection, and in addition to an HDMI port, there is also a composite connection. The games can be played with upscaling in 720p. In the photos, it appears that an SNES-like controller is included, but according to IGN, the company is not yet sure whether it can be used wirelessly or with a wire. Photos of the mini console can be found on that site, and on Gizmodo.
It may not be the first time you hear about the HyperKin. The company already demonstrated such a mini console on April 1, 2017. At the time, it was meant to be a fun joke like so many tech companies have on that day, but players seemed more positive about it than they thought. HyperKin has now actually made the device, although it’s not finalized yet. Later this year it will actually be for sale, but when that is exactly and what it will cost is not yet known.
