Huawei will release HarmonyOS in Europe next year
Huawei would like to release smartphones with HarmonyOS in Europe next year. Chinese media report this based on statements by Huawei chief executive Derek Yu. When HarmonyOS will be available exactly and on which Huawei devices is not known.
Yu, chief executive of Huawei Consumer Business in Central and Eastern Europe, is said to have said during an interview that Huawei wants to make its operating software available in Europe next year. At least that’s what the Chinese sites ITHome and Global Times write. The Huawei phones for the European market run the Android skin Emui, but the company is said to be in the process of replacing Huawei Emui with HarmonyOS. It is not clear whether the telephone manufacturer intends to do this with the European devices that are already on the market.
Huawei’s intent is to deliver HarmonyOS on multiple types of devices, and to run Android apps, the software includes Android code, among other things. Those apps then come from Huawei’s own AppGallery. Due to the US trade ban, Huawei was no longer able to put Google services on its Android phones, but you can still use code from Android.
Last year, Huawei already released a tablet with HarmonyOS in Europe, but no smartphones yet. The company reports to the Global Times that there are no HarmonyOS upgrade plans to report for smartphones outside of China. At the same time, the company said that by November 10, more than 170 million smartphones, smartwatches and tablets had been updated to HarmonyOS.
