Huawei wants Google apps in its app store

Huawei wants Google apps to be available through its own AppGallery. The Chinese manufacturer refers to the AppStore on iOS, wherever that is the case. In this way, consumers should still have access to Google services.

Huawei CEO Eric Xu expresses that wish in an interview with CNBC. Recent Huawei smartphones, such as the Mate 30 and P40, have come out without Google services due to trade restrictions imposed by the United States. With Huawei Mobile Services, the Chinese manufacturer has developed an alternative to Google services, but the manufacturer still wants to be able to offer Google apps and services.

In China, the manufacturer already supplies its phones without Google services and that is no problem for that market. In other parts of the world, where users are used to Android with Google services, sales are declining. Huawei tells CNBC that sales in 2019 were about 11 billion euros lower than expected due to the imposed trade restrictions. The annual turnover amounted to 112 billion euros, while the company expected an annual turnover of 123 billion euros in April. Trade restrictions were imposed in May.

Huawei says the financial setback mainly affects the consumer branch of the company. The turnover of that business unit that includes smartphones and laptops was 61 billion euros last year, which was about 9 billion euros lower than expected.

Due to the trade restrictions, US companies are only allowed to supply hardware or software to Huawei with permission. Google should probably also be allowed to offer its apps and services in the AppGallery.
